First, lemme mention that cover — because she is gorgeous. 🤩🤩🤩 I was definitely drawn in by that, along with the premise. MC August has been drowning in grief after losing his boyfriend in an accident. He feels stuck in his town, stuck in his routine, believing he doesn’t deserve to go on and do the things his boyfriend can’t. Then, he meets Cary. And sees Cary appear at a death scene, only to vanish into thin air. Weird, but okay. Maybe he was hallucinating?
But August catches Cary again, guiding someone somewhere. So he follows them, unintentionally falling into a different world. As it turns out, Cary is a ferrier, helping those that have passed into the Underworld. August wants to get the hell away from Cary, the hell away from the Underworld… until he realizes his late boyfriend could be there. If he could just befriend Cary and get the info he needs, he could finally reunite with his first love.
This was a great fantastical twist on grief, showing how miserable August was in the mortal realm versus how excited he was in the Underworld. He was pushing all his loved ones away, desperate to hold onto his boyfriend’s memory. Even if it put him in danger. I loved August’s journey here, in the way he became acquainted with death despite the pain. And though I wanted more time for his relationship with Cary to develop, I loved the hope they represented.
